John Brownlee born c1760 in Carluke Parish was married 27 August 1790[1] in Cambusnethan Parish to Mary Barrie (Barry) of Cambusnethan Parish. John Brownlee was a farmer[2].

They had issue:

1. James Brownlee, born circa 1807, in Wishawtoun, Cambusnethan Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Married Elizabeth Somerville (Somervale[3], Sommerville[4]), born c1811 daughter of (?) Sommerville and Mary Reid (maiden surname Douglas). Elizabeth died at 4:40pm on 24 February 1874 at 113 Main Street Wishaw aged 63 years[5]. She had suffered with heart disease for a period of 5 years. Her son James Brownlie was the informant[6]. James Brownlee’s occupation has been recorded as a Miller, Carter and labourer in distillery[7]. James died of acute bronchitis at 3am on 7 February 1857 (aged 50) in Wishaw. Mary Brownlie his daughter aged 16 (possibly from Hertshank?) was present at his death and was the informant. He was buried at Carluke Churchyard[8]. There was a Mary Ann Reid born c1826 aged 15 staying with them at the 1841 census.

2. Mary Brownlee, born 14 August 1837[10], Wishawtoun.  Baptised 3 September 1837[11], Wishawtoun. Died of Diarrhoea in Carluke (?) February 1838. Buried Carluke 21 February 1838.

3. Robert Brownlee, twin born 28 December 1840[12], baptised 7 March 1841[13], at Wishawtoun. Robert died in Carluke on 12 June 1841 and buried at Carluke Cemetery on 12 June 1841[14].

4. Mary Brownlee, twin born 28 December 1840[15], baptised 7 March 1841[16], at Wishawtoun.  Died 29 February 1920 at 103 Airbles Road, Motherwell, in Lanarkshire. Buried 3 March 1920 at Bent Cemetery (Lair NSL 24), Hamilton, in Lanarkshire.  Mary was married according to the (?) of the United Presbyterian Church at 113 Main Street Wishaw[17] on 12 December 1864[18] to Robert McCartney, Pitheadman and woodcutter, born 28 February 1842, baptised 20 March 1842, Ayr Ayrshire Scotland[19]. Died 18 January 1914 at 105 Airbles Road, Motherwell, in Lanarkshire.  Buried 20 January 1914 at Bent Cemetery (Lair NSL 24), Hamilton, Scotland. Robert was the son of Hugh McCartney, General Labourer or surface-man[20] and Jane[21] Pollock.  Hugh McCartney and Jane[22] Pollock married 15 April 1838 at Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland[23]. Marriage or banns also recorded on 27 April 1838 at Colyton, Ayrshire, Scotland[24]. Mary Brownlee was Robert’s second wife. His first wife was Jane Simpson, married 5 June 1863 in the manse at Old Monkland in Lanarkshire Scotland[25]. Witnesses at the marriage were (?) Crawford and Elizabeth Reid[26]. Robert and Mary lived at Smith’s Land, Hill Street Wishaw in 1881[27].

Robert McCartney and Jane Simpson had issue:

1. Hugh McCartney, born 3pm 15 January 1864 at Woodlands Cottage, Walkmill Road Old Monkland[28]. Hugh was married on 28 June 1889 at Neilson’s Square[29], Graham Street Wishaw after Banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland to Jessie McCall born c1868. Jessie was the daughter of James McCall, coalminer and Margaret (or Mary) Ramsay. Duff MacDonald BD., a minister from Dalziel performed the marriage. Witnesses to the marriage were George Russell and Nellie Manson. Hugh died at 11:15am on 15 January 1902 at Douglas’ Land Park Street Wishaw[30]. His informant at death was John McCall his brother in law who lived at 19 King Street Wishaw. Hugh was a clerk at age 17[31] and an Engine Driver at the time of his death.

James Brownlee and Elizabeth Somerville also had:

5. James Brownlee, born 24 May 1846, Wishaw, Lanarkshire.  Occupation was Master Bricklayer. Died 26 June 1892[32] at Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown NSW in Australia. James died on the steps of the hospital from Chronic Ulcer of Duodenum, acute Peritonitis.  Buried in Presbyterian Section, Rookwood Cemetery, NSW, on 27 June 1892.  James was married by Reverend Robert Gibson on Tuesday 21 July 1874 at Partick East Presbyterian Church to Catherine (or Catharine) Bell Duncan, born 3 August 1854 in Edinburgh, Scotland, illegitimate daughter of Catharine Bell of Collessie Parish. Her father's name was not recorded. Catherine Bell Duncan's parents were Robert Duncan and Catharine Bell and their Banns of Marriage was recorded in Kennoway on 6 August 1833[33] after a regular proclamation and in Collessie on 9 August 1833[34]. Robert was said to have been a gardener at Edinburgh Castle although not verified. Catherine died 25 January 1934[35] at John Street, Leichhardt NSW, in Australia from a Cerebral Haemorrhage. James Brownlee, born 5 April 1877 at 21 Portland Square, Hamilton, Scotland.  Was a Milk Vendor and became a director of the Milk Board in Sydney, Australia.  He was a keen sailor (18 footers) and had trotters.  Died 22 August 1954.  Married Emily Borley, born 25 June 1883 at Tenterfield, N.S.W.  Emily was the daughter of William John Borley, Dairyman and Mary O’Neill.  Emily died 24 June 1959. Robert Duncan Brownlee, born 25 January 1879, at 52 Union Street, Hamilton, Scotland.  Married Annie Johnson, born 29 March 1877, daughter of William Arthur Johnson.   Annie Johnson was born in Cheshire, England and migrated to Australia with her parents.  She died 28 February 1960.  Robert started a box factory in Annandale around the turn of the century.  In 1908 he founded R. Brownlee & Co. Ltd. Sawmill at Ourimbah, N.S.W.  This Sawmill was taken over by his son Robert William Brownlee after his death on 27 October 1935[36].  He also had shares in Taylor Brothers and Brownlee boatshed at The Entrance, N.S.W., where he was involved in building and repairing boats for hire.  Robert Brownlee also shared an interest in trotters, with his brother, James Brownlee. 4. John Brownlee, born 19 March 1881 at Dunedin, New Zealand[37].  Migrated to Australia with parents in 1884.  Worked at R. Brownlee & Co. Ltd. at Ourimbah.  Married in 1908[38] (Marriage registered at Annandale) to Bertha May Franklin born at Petersham on 17 December 1887[39], died 14 July 1972 buried at Ronkana Cemetery.  Daughter of Joseph Franklin and Elizabeth A(nn?) Milner or Hilner[40]. Refer Marriage Certificate registered in Concord 1740/1880[41]. NB: Other siblings of Joseph Franklin and Elizabeth Ann Milner or Hilner were Alfred George Franklin born 1881 in Petersham[42], Lizzie Franklin born 1883 in Canterbury[43], and Mary A(nn) Franklin born 1889[44]. William Somerville Brownlee was born 12 June 1883 at Ravensbourne[48] (Rothesay)[49] Dunedin New Zealand.  Died 13 June 1960 at Leichhardt, NSW.  Worked as Boot maker, worked on sheep stations as a slushy (cleaned the shearing sheds), drove meat wagons for Riverstone Meat Works, worked on Glebe Island, worked for R. Brownlee & Co. Ltd. Sawmills at Ourimbah for 10 years (1917-1927) as a saw sharpener.  Married at “The Parsonage”, Wellington Street, Bondi by the Reverend Eustace Coplin Thomas. Witnesses were Elisabeth Lang and Mabel Thomas[50]. Married to Maria Bessie Chadwick born 19 April 1893, died 31 May 1981.  Maria was 2nd child of Edward Chadwick born in Kings County, Ireland circa 1859. Edward’s parents, Frederick and Julia Chadwick, were farmers. Edward had come to Australia in the 1880’s and was a van proprietor in Sydney. Edward married Elizabeth Ralph, born c1861 in Roscrea, Tipperary, Ireland. Edward and Elizabeth were married at St Phillips Church of England, Sydney by Rev. H. Izod Richards on 20 August 1890[51]. Elizabeth died on 14 November 1901 of Typhoid Fever[52], and after her death, Catherine Bell Brownlee, by now, a widower, looked after young Maria Bessie and William Edward Chadwick.  On 31 January 1905[53], Edward Chadwick suffered a fractured skull and passed away as a result of a collision between his van and a tram in Sydney. In his will[54], Catherine Bell Brownlee was sworn as Guardian of his children. It was through my grandmother’s love and inspiration that I developed an interest in the Brownlee family history. I remember spending many days and nights sitting with her as she told me stories of how it was when she was a child. I treasure those stories and without them, this book would not have been possible. I am also grateful to her for teaching me some qualities that have helped me through many personal challenges. They were persistence and perseverance. Her words still play in my head whenever I need them “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again[55].” Thanks to her, I learned, that if you persist with your dream and never, ever, give up, no matter what is said against that dream, then that dream can be yours. King Robert the Bruce I was born at Lochmaben Castle in 1274. He was Knight and Overlord of Annandale. In 1306 he was crowned King of Scotland and henceforth tried to free Scotland from the English enemy. After being defeated at a battle, Bruce escaped and found a hideout in a cave. Hiding in a cave for three months, Bruce was at the lowest point of his life. He thought about leaving the country and never coming back. While waiting, he watched a spider building a web in the cave's entrance. The spider fell down time after time, but finally he succeeded with his web. So Bruce decided also to retry his fight and told his men: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again". This comment was written into this history on 19 April 2004, while I was reflecting on the 111th anniversary of Grandma Brownlee’s birth - Ian Edward Brownlee, editor.

Worked as a Cooper for Sunlight Cooperage, later known as General Cooperage.  Died 21 January 1997 at Jamieson Private Hospital in Penrith NSW while having a knee reconstruction. Edward contracted Pneumonia but died from heart failure. Cremated at Leura Memorial Gardens in Leura NSW on 29 January 1997. Married 28 May 1949[57] at Presbyterian Church, Leichhardt, NSW to Caroline Sarah Harding, born 16 August 1914[58] at Gale Street, Mortlake, NSW Died 11th September 1993[59] at Blue Mountains Memorial Hospital in Katoomba NSW from Heart Failure. Cremated at Leura Memorial Gardens in Leura NSW. Daughter of Robert Andrew Harding, born c1881 at Gulgong NSW and Emily Austin Smith. Born 1883 at Balmain NSW (Robert Andrew Harding and Emily Austin Smith were married at Mortlake 28 July 1909) Edward played A-Grade tennis and was also recognised as a champion Lawn Bowler at Gladstone Park Bowling Club in Balmain. Both Edward and Caroline’s name appears on the bowling club’s honour board.

2. Ian Edward Brownlee, born 27 March 1951[60] at King George V Memorial Hospital for Mothers and Babies, Camperdown, N.S.W. Witnesses to the birth were Dr R Mulhearn and Sister J Gallagher. Ian was baptised on 19 August 1951 at Hunter Baillie Memorial Presbyterian Church, Annandale[61]. He studied at Leichhardt Boys Primary School (Leichhardt Central School) from 1955 to 1962, Ibrox Park Boys School in Leichhardt 1963 to 1966. Ian sat for and passed the last Intermediate Certificate in 1965 and the first School Certificate in 1966. He was apprenticed (indentured) as a Letterpress Printer to Simmons Limited in Glebe in 1967. He attended the Sydney Technical College, School of Graphic Arts at Ultimo 1968 to 1971 and was awarded a Special Merit in Practical Work, Letterpress Printing Stage 3 (1970) on 1st July 1971[62], also achieved the Best Pass in NSW, Stage 4 (1971), known as the George Collie Memorial Prize, on 6th July 1972[63]. Ian completed his Trade Course Certificate in Letterpress Printing in the honours grade on 31 December 1971[64]. Noel Crichton, Director of Simmons Limited, presented Ian with a gold watch and card on 6 July, 1972 at a ceremony in the factory at Glebe. The award was in ‘recognition of outstanding achievements during his Letterpress Apprenticeship’. In 1973, Ian was promoted to Production Assistant and then Co-Production Manager with Jim Stevens (who was later employed by Star Printing) in 1974, remaining in this position, until Simmons Limited was taken over by G.L. Productions (George Lewis Group) in 1976. For the next two years, until 1978, Ian and Ken Bates (who was later employed by Hytec Cut Formes owned by Cardboard Containers) were employed as Co-Production Managers with GL Productions, after which, he resigned after purchasing a Blue Mountains Bread Run from Fielders Bakeries.  In 1980, he was offered a position, back in the printing industry, by a former colleague, Brian Rosenbladh, so he sold the bread run back to Fielders Bakeries and commenced working with CBS Records Australia Ltd  (Printing Division) as their Production Co-ordinator and Safety Officer.  Several years later, in 1983, Ian was promoted to Factory Manager.  After much deliberation, he resigned as Factory Manager on 2 November 1984.  Ian and Jannette formed a partnership trading as Brownlee Printing on 19th November 1984, taking over the business of S. & R. Franklin (Printers) at Katoomba, N.S.W. Brownlee Printing Pty Limited was registered as a company on 2 June 1987. Auspress Pty Limited was registered as a company 12 February 1990. Brownlee Printing was sold in 1997 to Natural Paper Pty Ltd. Ian remains as the Director of his company, Auspress Pty Ltd, now trading as Auspress Marketing. Auspress Marketing operates as a printing and marketing consultant. Ian was also a member of the Rotary Club of Katoomba from 1985 to 1997 and held the office of Secretary on two occasions, (?) and 1988. He was also treasurer in (?). His name appears on the honour board.[65]

Ian has always been a very keen photograper and when he was living at 92 Catherine Street, Leichhardt with his parents, Ian had a darkroom setup in the former bedroom of his grandather, William. He would process his film and print the photographs. This was long before Ian entered the printing trade as an apprentice printer. Prior to that Ian had a number of hobbies such as model trains. He would save up his pocket money and would catch the bus to Hobbyco in Sydney to buy various components to set up his model train display. Ian built a mountain out of paper mache, fenced fields with cattle, houses, a railway station and sheds. His favourite train engine was a gift from mum and dad one Christmas. It had a headlight and a chimney that you would put a drop of oil in. The oil would be heated and blow smoke from the chimney. He delighted in turning out the lights in the room and sendit full steam ahead through the tunnel that was built through the mountain. This was all built on the same old oak dining table that would later house the enlarger in Ian's darkroom. Other hobbies were Ian's collections. He loved to collect stamps, first day of issue stamp covers, coins, rocks, shells and even insects.  The result of one of Ian's long term hobbies is this website. Ian has had a keen in interest in genealogy since he was about 16. He is a member of Society of Australian Genealogists, the Scottish Australian Heritage Council and is a past member of the Scottish Genealogical Society and past member of the Scottish Record Society. It was on 2 March 1985, that Ian was appointed as Sennachie (Clan Historian) to the House of Brownlee, by its founder, Allan Lindsay Arnold Brownlee. 

Jannette Coral Maher started working at Simmons Limited in Glebe where Ian was apprenticed. She worked as a table hand in the binding department. They became friends through their work and on the 16 October 1971 at a Simmons Limited social Beef and Burgundy night at Massey Park Bowling Club decided to have a more serious relationship. At 7.30pm on 17 February 1973, Ian and Jannette celebrated their engagement to be married at Glebe Town Hall, St John’s Road, in Glebe. Ian was married firstly, on 16 February 1974[66] at Hunter Baillie Memorial Presbyterian Church, Annandale, N.S.W., to Jannette Coral Maher, born 16 January 1955, Sydney, N.S.W. and baptised at Hunter Baillie Memorial Presbyterian Church, Annandale, N.S.W., on 16 July 1972 by Reverend F. Brian Bray. Jannette is the daughter of Jack Kenneth Maher born (?) and Betty Clare Platford born (?) October 1935 died 8 May 2009. A celebration of her life was held at 11am on Wednesday 13 May 2009 at Lake Macquarie Memorial Park, Ryhope. After Ian and Jannette's marriage, they lived at 92 Catherine Street, Leichhardt with Ian’s parents, Edward and Caroline Brownlee. In 1975, they moved into their new home at 29 Talbot Road, Hazelbrook in the Blue Mountains. In 1992, Edward and Caroline sold their house in Leichhardt, Ian and Jannette sold the Hazelbrook home and they built a new home at 1 Mission Street, Katoomba. Ian and Jannette were divorced on 9 June 2000[67].

Robert Edward Brownlee, born 20 December 1976 at Penrith, N.S.W.  Robert has had various experiences in his occupation: In 1995 to 1997 he was restaurant manager at Echoes Guest House; 1996 to 1997 the resident manager along with Maxine Trethewey at Echoes Guest House; 1997 to 2000 he was the banquet operations supervisor at Fairmont Resort.  In 2000 he was the restaurant manager at the Palais Royale in Katoomba; 2000 to 2002 carpentry maintenance with Rapid Constructions in Sydney; 2002 to 2003 kitchen installer with Trevmeg Joinery in Western Sydney; 2004 store manager with DNM Computers in Toowoomba, Queensland and currently (2004) in a bottle shop in Toowoomba. Rob’s partner, Maxine Deborah Trethewey (formerly Wadeley), Occupation Hospitality at Fairmont Resort and Echoes Guest House, Katoomba NSW. Maxine worked in the bakery for Whisk and Pin, Katoomba before moving to Toowoomba. Maxine was born 19 December 1969, in Carlton, Victoria, Australia, daughter of Patricia Morgan, born 7 January 1942 at Normanton & John Christopher Wadeley, Surveyor, born 21 December 1922 at Normanton (Patricia & John were married 17 June 1966 at Sandwich, England).

Ian Edward Brownlee (Photo 1) (Photo 2) was married secondly, on 24 March 2001 at St Stephen’s Uniting Church, Sydney (by Reverend, Bruce Channon Walker), to Doris Maria Zonta MBBS, MPH, FAFPHM (nee Kawerau), born 25 March 1953, Perth, Western Australia, daughter of Wolfram Kawerau, born 6 December 1919 in Berlin, Germany, died 17 September 1999, cremated 22 September 1999, in Perth, Western Australia (son of Georg Siegfried Kawerau, a headmaster and his first cousin, Anna Magdalene Kawerau) and Elsbeth Anna Maria Barich, born 13 June 1921 Wadenswil, Switzerland, died 17 September 2003 at Blue Mountains District Memorial Hospital in Katoomba, service by Reverend Steve Aynsley 22 September 2003 at Leura Uniting Church and cremated at Leura Memorial Gardens and Crematorium. Elsbeth passed away on the fourth anniversary of Wolfram’s death. Wolfram and Elsbeth were very close and although she suffered an aneurism on 12 September, she fought for 5 days to share the same anniversary. Wolfram and Elsbeth were married 9 January 1951 at Bleienbach, Switzerland.

After short periods in General Practice and as a Commonwealth Medical Officer, Doris set out to develop management and administration skills and worked for three years as Manager of the A.C.T. office of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Community Care. Between 1991 and 1994, Doris completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health through the University of Sydney. For three years Doris was Secretary to the Health Care Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). From April 1995 to December 1998, she held the position of Chief Health Officer and Executive Director Population Health in the A.C.T. She was also a foundation member of the National Public Health Partnership Group. During 1999, Doris worked directly with the N.S.W. Chief Health Officer, conducting a review of Public Health in N.S.W. From January 2000, she has worked in General Practice in a number Medical Centres, Parramatta, Leura, Katoomba, Lithgow and Wallerawang. Currently, 2004, Doris works with cardiologist, Dr John England, supervising stress tests. Doris has a passion for prevention of illness and has set up an Anti Ageing Medicine Clinic at Dr England’s practice in Katoomba. She also studied by correspondence, and completed with distinction a "Post Graduate Diploma in Nutritional and Environmental Medicine and in Integrative Medicine" with Swinburne University of Technology in Hawthorne, Melbourne.
Doris and Ian also built an Amway business to a significant level, helping other people also achieve financial success. Besides developing an ongoing recurring income, they were also rewarded for their success by qualifying for a number of free all expenses paid Achievers trips. To Hilton Hawaiian Village, Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii in 2003 and 2004; The Grand Hyatt in Shanghai, China in 2006; and the Hilton Waikaloa on Hawaii, the Big Island in October/November 2007 (just a month before Doris passed away). Due to the residual income nature of their Amway business, their income continued to flow during the 4 years of medical treatment. Ian was also able to qualify in 2008 for the Amway Achievers trip to the island of Mauritius, off South Africa. Ian had not travelled overseas before qualifying for the Achievers trips, but has since has spent four weeks in Scotland, France and Switzerland in 2004, two weeks in Bavaria, Germany and Austria in 2006 and later in 2006, two weeks in Guangzhou, Guangdong in China. Ian and Doris' business extends to all states in Australia, the UK and Philippines.
Doris Maria Brownlee passed away at 4.33am EST (5.33am daylight savings time) on 8 December 2007 at Blue Mountains Memorial Hospital in Katoomba. Her friend and colleague, Dr John England officiated. Her funeral service was held at Leura Uniting Church, corner Megalong Street and Grose Street, Leura at 1pm on Friday 14th December 2007. Many of Ian and Doris' family, friends and business associates were in attendance, with quite a few travelling from Sydney and interstate. This was a true testimony to the beautiful lady she was. Reverend Steve Aynsley led the service. A private cremation was held at Leura Memorial Gardens Crematorium. Piper, Michael Brownlee led the funeral procession from the church to the end of Grose Street. Until we meet again.

Ian Edward Brownlee was married thirdly, on 21 March 2009 at Leura Uniting Church, Leura (by Reverend, Steven Aynsley), to Lorraine Helen Russell, born 22 July 1956. At Lorraine's request, a memorial candle to her friend and Ian's wife Doris was lit and remained alight for the duration of the service. Ian and Lorraine's Wedding Celebration Dinner was held at Katoomba Golf Club and a second celebration was held on Sunday 22 March at il Gusto Italian Restaurant, Lygon Street, Melbourne. They honeymooned in Tasmania, staying at Queenstown, Cradle Mountain, Launceston, Freycinet and Hobart before flying back into Melbourne. From here they hired a car and drove to Echuca. After an overnight stopover it was back to Sydney via the Hay Plains.
Ian and lorraine continue to build the Amway business that Ian and Doris had put together. In their own right, Ian and Lorraine qualified for the Amway Achievers trip to Tokyo, Japan in 2009. They extended their trip to travel to Hiroshima aboard the famous Bullet Train (Shinkansen) and to Kyoto. They also did a stopover in Singapore before flying back to Sydney. They qualified for Achievers 2010 to stay at the Reef Resort on Hamilton Island.

After starting with Fell and Starkey Chartered Accountants (now Ernst and Young) in 1972, Paul studied accountancy at the University of NSW, finalising his accounting qualifications in 1979. By 1980, he had joined Coal and Allied Industries Ltd, initially as Financial Accountant, but then later as Financial Controller. He remained with Coal and Allied Industries until 1990 when he joined Pont Data International Pty Ltd as their Financial Controller. Paul decided that he would rather take up self-employment and in 1995 he partnered with John Perry as a Public Accountant. Together they formed Perry Harrison Chartered Accountants and set up their office in Hurstville, NSW.
